Lot was the son of Haran, Abraham's youngest brother (Gen. 11:27, 31; 12:5). He migrated with Abram and Sarai from Mesopotamia to Canaan, then to Egypt, and back to Canaan (Gen. 13:1). Because of a conflict between their herdsmen, Abraham suggested that Lot take his choice of land. Lot chose the land of the Jordan valley, and "Pitched his tents near Sodom" (Gen. 13:12). Lot was taken captive during a battle, and had to be rescued by Abraham (Gen. 14).
Because of Sodom's great wickedness, God chose to punish that city. But prior to doing so, he sent angels to warn Lot and his family. After a great deal of struggle, Lot finally left the city with his wife and two daughters, only to have his wife look back at which point "she became a pillar of salt" (Gen. 19:26).
In the final scene of this man, we see Lot living in a cave with his two daughters, who despaired of finding husbands. In a drunken state on two consecutive nights, Lot became the unwitting father of their sons, Moab and Ben-Ammi (Gen. 19:30-38).
